What Ifs: A Shift in Perspective

Earlier this year, I read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig—and, not to be dramatic, it hasn’t left my mind since. I think about it in some form or fashion almost daily—I’ve probably taken it too far...

I won’t spoil anything for those who want to read—but here’s a super small summary: the protagonist winds up in a library where each book represents a version of her life, shaped by a different choice she could have made. She gets to step into these alternate lives to see what might happen had her life taken that turn. She gets an idea of her life if she had moved to a different country, married someone else, or pursued a different career.

I’ve said this book crosses my mind all the time, and that’s because it offers such a powerful tool for changing perspective. In my work, I often talk about how we can respond to challenges: change the situation, tolerate it, change our perspective, or do nothing. The Midnight Library is an inspiring reminder of how impactful a shift in perspective can be.

While I don’t often encourage thinking about or dwelling on the ‘what ifs...,’ this is a bit of a spin on that—didn’t get the job you wanted? Maybe it’s saving you from future headaches. Missed out on an event? Perhaps it’s sparing you from unexpected tragedy. Going through a breakup? Better things may be waiting for you.

Sure, it could go the other way too—but thinking about the possibilities can help us find peace with the present.

The book has reminded me that life’s twists and turns, even the disappointing ones, can lead us to unexpected places. And sometimes, just imagining those "what ifs" in a positive light can be enough to shift your mindset for the better.
